Maryland DUI Ignition Interlock Program
You may forced to enroll in the DUI ignition interlock program if you have been arrested for driving under the influence in Maryland. For a first offense DUI, there are two ways the MVA may require you to enroll in the DUI ignition interlock program. First, if you refused the breathalyzer test. Second, if you took the breathalyzer, but had a BAC over 0.15. The DUI ignition interlock program requires the installation of interlock in your vehicle.
What is the DUI Ignition Interlock Program?
The ignition interlock is a device that connects a vehicle’s ignition system to a breath analyzer that measures a driver’s breath alcohol level. The device prevents a motor vehicle from starting if the driver’s breath alcohol level exceeds the setting on the device. After starting the car, random retests are required to be certain the driver has not consumed alcohol while driving.
You are responsible for all costs associated with the ignition interlock program participation and must report to a service provider every 30 days to have the device calibrated and the data logger information downloaded.
The data logger keeps a record of every transaction, along with the date, time, and alcohol level, any efforts to disable or circumvent the unit and random retest compliance. This information is reported to the MVA, and a violation may kick you out of the program and suspend your license.
Where can you get the DUI Ignition Interlock installed?
Each of the following MVA authorized Ignition Interlock Service Providers have locations throughout the state. If you are going to enter the ignition interlock program, then you need to call one of the following providers to set up an appointment. You then take your vehicle to your appointment and have the interlock installed. After the interlock is installed, you take your vehicle and paperwork to the MVA to get your driver’s license and enroll in the ignition interlock program.
