What kind of car insurance do you need?
When purchasing car insurance you should strongly consider working with a local insurance agent. Our office is happy to make a referral for you if you don’t know a local insurance agent.
Your insurance agent can help you select the best insurance for your needs. Here, is some basic information you should understand before selecting your car insurance.
Remember, car insurance exists to protect you if you are at fault for an accident, or injured by another driver that broke the rules of the road.
Maryland Car Insurance
Most Maryland drivers have liability insurance. Liability insurance covers expenses associated with property damage or an bodily injury. Maryland law requires drivers to carry a certain amount of coverage for these types of insurance. Maryland requires drivers to carry a minimum of $30,000 per person, and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury claims. The minimum coverage for property damage is $15,000.
You are required, under Maryland law, to carry liability, UM and PIP, but the other insurance options are up to you.
Uninsured motorist (UM)
If you were injured in an accident by a driver that didn’t have insurance, then your uninsured motorist insurance would cover your harms and losses.
Underinsured motorist (UIM)
If you were injured in an accident by a driver that didn’t have enough insurance to cover your harms and losses, then your underinsured motorist insurance would make the difference.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
PIP pays medical bills and reimbursement of lost wages regardless of fault. Typically, people carry $2,500.00 in PIP insurance. You should always carry PIP insurance and never waive it.
Medpay coverage
Medpay is like PIP insurance, it covers medical expenses. This coverage is optional in Maryland.
Collision
Collision insurance is an option that covers the expenses for your damaged car.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive insurance is an option that covers things like your car being stolen, or a tree falling on your parked car.
